10 Reasons to Work with a Physical Therapist

Physical therapy isn't just for severe pain or rehabilitation after a surgery or injury. Physical therapists encourage movement and are mobility experts. Here are some reasons to see a physical therapist that you may not have thought of:

  1. Help with setting up an ergonomically correct work station. Whether you are working from a home office or the kitchen table, a physical therapist can help you set up a work station that will minimize your risk of injury or pain. Some physical therapists may also travel to your office to assess your work space. (Clayton PT does!)

  2. Help with managing a disease such as diabetes or multiple sclerosis. Studies have shown that exercise and weight loss can help to manage chronic diseases- often even reducing the need for medication.

  3. Guidance in beginning an exercise program safely

  4. Improve your posture. Posture is related to many common injuries/ pain including shoulder pain and headaches.

  5. Evaluate your current exercise program to correct mistakes in form, progression, etc

  6. Help you prepare for surgery or possibly avoid surgery. Increasing your strength prior to surgery can improve your results and speed recovery following surgery.

  7. Perform a movement screen to help you get better at or begin a sport or activity. Want to take up running? Visit a physical therapist for a running gait analysis to help prevent injuries

  8. Help returning to exercise after having a baby. It can be intimidating returning to (or beginning!) to exercise following pregnancy. A physical therapist can guide you and give you the confidence and support you need.

  9. You have pain while doing a favorite activity. Don't stop your favorite activities because of pain! A physical therapist can help you keep doing the things you love

  10. You want to age gracefully. Pain is not an inevitable result of aging. While the incidence of osteoarthritis increases as we age, this doesn't mean you need to suffer from pain or decrease your activity level. Physical therapy may help manage these symptoms and keep you doing the things you love. Physical therapists can also help with balance which can reduce the risk of falls and help keep you independent longer.

In most states you do not need a referral from a Dr to begin physical therapy. Many physical therapists will offer free consultations to see if physical therapy is right for you. If you are in the Fenton, MI area contact me for a free discovery session.
